Laika

Laika, a stray of Russian husky, was the first living creature sent to space. On November3, 1957, she was launched into space on Sputnik 2, a Soviet spacecraft.

She was planned to be euthanized with a poisoned food after ten days of space voyage. According to a scientists behind the Sputnik 2 mission, however, Laika had died from overheating and stress several hours after the launch.

Her death was destined from the beginning because Sputnik 2 was not designed to be retrievable. On April 14, 1958, the Soviet spacecraft carrying her body was destroyed during the reentry into the Earth's atmosphere.

오래전이라 왜곡되고 희미하기는 하지만 어렸을 때 본 만화가 기억난다.
인간에 의해 우주로 보내진 라이카는 우주를 떠돌아 다니며 인간에 대한 증오를 키워간다. 기나긴 세월동안 우주를 흘러다니다가 다시 지구로 돌아온 라이카는 인간에게 복수를 하려한다. 하지만 마지막 결정적인 순간 라이카는 거대한 인간의 아기의 모습으로 변하는 것을 선택한다.
인간을 증오하지만 인간을 동경하는 아이러니한 결론. 이 마지막 장면이 인상에 남아서인지 흐릿하지만 기억에 가끔 떠오른다.
